Review of X-Men: Days of Future Past

 

I have been waiting for this day ALL YEAR!! I was so excited to see this movie. The trailers looked amazing, the cast is seriously a dream cast. I mean, old and young Professor X and Magneto in the same movie? Even though I was super excited for this movie, I was also a little apprehensive because I had such high expectations. I was a little worried I would pull another Captain America: The Winter Solider. Everyone was seriously tooting that movie's horn and when I saw it my expectations were not met (even though it was still a good movie). So, I tried to keep my expectations high, but manageable. I still remember being burned by a few X-men movies before and you know which movies I'm talking about.

This movie got so much RIGHT. From start to finish I was invested in the story and the characters. Even the X-men in the beginning of the movie, who we don't really get to see much of except for the battles, are still well done and that part of the story didn't feel rushed. Instead, I enjoyed going back and forth between future and past. I thought Blink was so cool. I want portal powers now! Bishop looked amazing and Storm actually didn't annoy me for once. It was great seeing Magneto and Professor X as heroes and working together. Too cool. I can't forget how great the sentinels looked. At first, I was like "meh", but then you learn why they look the way the look (no spoilers!) and it totally makes sense.

Okay, so Kitty Pride transfers Wolverine's consciousness into his younger body in 1973 in order to keep Raven aka Mystique from killing Tusk (Peter Dinklage) which causes the Sentinel program to be approved thus leading the world into the future they are trying to prevent.  Logan has to recruit Charles and Erik in order to convince her to change her ways, but things don't go exactly to plan. Charles has taken some kind of serum in order to give him the ability to walk again, but it also changes his genetics so he doesn't have his powers anymore. He is a drunk and obviously lost. I have never seen James McAvoy act so well. Don't get me wrong, I think he is an absolutely brilliant, top notch actor. But he did something special for this movie. He added so much torture and pain to Charles. That scene with him and older Charles...Just wow.*geek attack*

Another stand out of the movie is Evan Peters as Quicksilver. I totally thought this character was going to be LAME. He looked dumb in the stills and let's try to forget that stupid Carl's Jr commercial. He looked like DJ Pon-3 from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Tell me I'm wrong.

When you actually watch the movie, his look makes more sense and he is one of the best characters of the movie. I actually wanted MORE of him and I really did think he was going to come stop Erik in the end. Also, the little reference about Magento being his dad was very slick and cute. On a side note, Joss Whedon *all shall bow* is also using Quicksilver in his Avengers 2 movie. It'll be interesting to see how he uses the character. I'm not sure if his version will be as quirky as Evan Peter's version. The extra credit scene after Captain America: The Winter Solider showed him kind of..crazy? I guess we will just have to wait and see.

Let's see, I'm still trying to think of everything I loved about this movie. I loved the over all tone. It was very consistent (take that Amazing Spiderman 2). Everyone came out to play and I'm not just including the actors. The writers and director did a great job. Bravo. I am a little confused about the ending when Mystique is shown to be Stryker...does that mean Logan DOESN'T get his adamantium claws? I automatically assumed that Stryker would be the one to find Logan and that way he still gets his adamantium claws...now I just don't know.  How is this film going to lead into Apocalypse? I feel like there should be an in between movie to tie everything in. I still have so many questions! Gah, but I guess that will have to wait for another day. 

Over all, this is a wonderful film. You have brilliant actors and writers pulling off a complicated story without making it too messy while fixing the freaking mess X3 and Origins made of the franchise. I love this movie and it is DEFINITELY worth seeing. If you aren't familiar with the x-men franchise then I suggest giving the first trilogy a view and X-Men: First Class just because there are some references to those films that you might miss if you haven't seen them. It seems that everyone is enjoying this film and I couldn't be happier. I look forward to seeing the future of this franchise, but I know Hugh Jackman's time as Wolverine is coming to an end. I am hoping for ONE LAST Wolverine movie...maybe some version of the "Old Man Logan" story by Mark Millar. You'd have to replace a lot of the characters because they belong to Disney (Hulk/Bruce Banner, Red Skull, Hawkeye, etc), but it would be amazing to see some version of this story on the big screen.
