Pretty Deadly Vol 1: The Shrike Review

Title: Pretty Deadly Volume 1: The Shrike
Writer: Kelly Sue DeConnick
Illustrator: Emma Rios
Publisher: Image Comics

Collects PRETTY DEADLY #1-5! KELLY SUE DeCONNICK (Avengers Assemble, Captain Marvel) and EMMA RÍOS (Dr. Strange, Osborn) present the collected opening arc of their surprise-hit series that marries the magical realism of Sandman with the western brutality of Preacher. Death's daughter rides the wind on a horse made of smoke and her face bears the skull marks of her father. Her origin story is a tale of retribution as beautifully lush as it is unflinchingly savage.

I have so many emotions about this book.  It is so different than any other comic I have ever read.  This is the type of comic book that could be read in a college writing course.  It is pretty hard to describe this book.  It's part western, part fable, part myth.  The art by Emma Rios is amazing and I love that there is so much to look at on each page.  I've read this book about three times since I first bought it.  Each time I read it I feel like I understand the story more.  I don't want to be all up this book's ass, but I can't help it.  Kelly Sue Deconnick has outdone herself with this one and I can't wait to see where it goes.  Ginny is my absolutely favorite character.  I love the look of her and her story.  I can't wait to cosplay as her.  Just see the images below.  What a badass.

The only thing I have to say about this book, and it's not a negative, is that this story felt like a complete story.  If this book ended with the first volume I would be fine with that because the ending felt complete.  However, I'm happy that the series is going to keep going and I look forward to seeing what other stories this team will come up with.  If you haven't added Pretty Deadly to your pull list yet then head to your local comic book store, buy the first volume, and then add it to your pull list.  You won't want to miss it.

And where can I buy some original artwork for this story? I will happily throw money at Emma Rios for a chance to get some of this amazing art.

The Movement Review #1-3

After THREE WEEKS of not going to my local comic book store, I finally went yesterday. I picked up my usual Swamp Thing, the first volume of Ex Machina, and The Movement #1-3. Today I will be talking about The Movement.

The Movement is new DC comic written by Gail Simone with art by Feddie E. Williams II. Set in a town called Coral City where everyone from the cops to the government are corrupt. Citizens lead by a group of super humans are taking back their streets. I'm excited about this series because I love a good tale that makes you question what is right and wrong.

In issue #1, we open up to a scene where two cops are patting down two kids. They find drugs on one of the kids and the cops want to take them in for possession. One cop then says they'll let the two of them go if the girl exposes herself to the cops. Suddenly, people wearing silver masks holding up cell phones that say "i.c.u" are all around them. They've recorded the whole incident on video. This is the first time we see members of The Movement and it is super cool. You get a sense that they're everywhere.

We meet important characters who seem to be in charge of The Movement. The leader is named Virtue and she can ride people's emotions. Doesn't sound like a very cool super power, but it looks good in the comic.  Katharsis has mechanical wings and a bad attitude. She reminds me of Jack Bauer. She's willing to break some fingers to get things done. We also meet Tremor, who is my personal favorite. We see her completely rearrange the street's topography with one touch of her hand. What a badass. We are introduced to Mouse, who can apparently control mice. He is another favorite of mine. We also meet a boy who calls himself Burden. He believes he is possessed by the devil, bu he really just has a creepy super power that turns him kind of evil.

The first issue of The Movement is fun and introduces a lot of characters without feeling rushed or too crowded. Simone does a great job of making everyone stand out in their own way. We are also introduced to the plot of a serial killer named the Cornea Killer. He/she is killing people and cutting their eyes out. Who is this Cornea Killer? And how is the group going to stay together with all their different point of views? I'm interested to find out!

Rating: 8/10 lightsabers

In issue #2, Virtue has captured the two corrupt cops from issue #1 and is keeping them prisoner in the group's lair. We meet a character named Vengeance Moth, a girl in a wheel chair who treats the cops with kindness. Mouse is having a breakdown because one of his mice died...then he eats it. You can tell his character will serve as the comic relief.

Anyways, the group is having a meeting about what to do with the cops. Tremor wants to let them go while Katharsis wants to teach them a lesson. Tension rises and Katharsis leaves to find the Cornea Killer herself. She goes to see a man named James Cannon, who apparently runs Coral City. It is there she gets into some trouble.

Meanwhile, the others are trying to find the Weather Witch because the Cornea Killer leaves a puddle of water behind each victim's head. The team is attacked and they kick some major ass. Then...the Weather Witch aka Rainmaker arrives. DUN DUN DUN!

This issue was a lot of fun. You get great dialogue with a lot of action. These characters are tough and you can tell some of them have some anger issues...Katharsis. She is one tough cookie. The art isn't spectacular, but it could be a lot worse. I honestly thought Rainmaker looked kind of silly. I just wasn't feeling her outfit. Just didn't do it for me.

Rating: 9/10 lightsabers

In issue #3, Katharsis is captured. The Rainmaker is well, making it rain. The team doesn't really know what to do. This whole time the Cornea Killer is still on the loose. Finally, Virtue talks some sense into Rainmaker. No need to go all crazy. We find out someone is setting Rainmaker up to look like the Cornea Killer. Rainmaker points the blame to James Cannon, the same man Katharsis went to visit. Virtue asks Rainmaker aka Sarah to help the group, but she says no. She just wants to be left alone. Virtue does get her number, though. Now the team has to go rescue Katharsis from jail. Virtue tries to trade the two cops for Katharsis, but Officer Fricks isn't having it. Then Virtue stands next to a window and we see a group of people with silver masks outside. Virtue says, "I tired to be nice. Now, we tear your damn 'house' down to the ground".

It seems to me that the team is going to be getting Katharsis's ass out of trouble a lot. She is emotional and angry which makes her dangerous. I love her character though. She is becoming my favorite. I am interested to see if Virtue will really ransack the police department. So far, she has been on the fence about violence. Will she cross that line to save Katharsis? Or is this just a threat?

Rating 8/10

So far, this title is off to a great start. As I said before, I love a story that makes you question your morals. This story has a Watchmen/V for Vendetta feel. After reading three issues, I have decided I will definitely be picking this one up every month.
We are faceless. We are limitless. We see all. And we do not forgive.
Who defends the powerless against the GREEDY and the CORRUPT? Who protects the homeless and poverty-stricken from those who would PREY upon them in the DARK OF NIGHT?
When those who are sworn to protect us abuse their power, when toxic government calls down super-human lackeys to force order upon the populace...finally, there is a force, a citizen’s army, to push order BACK.
Let those who abuse the system know this as well: We have our OWN super humans now. They are not afraid of your badges or Leagues. And they will not be SILENCED.
We are your neighbors. We are your co-workers. And we are your children.

My favorite comic books at the moment.

Saga Volume 1, 2012
Writer: Brian K. Vaughan
Illustrator: Fiona Staples
Collects issues #1-6

Goodreads Summary
When two soldiers from opposite sides of a never-ending galactic war fall in love, they risk everything to bring a fragile new life into a dangerous old universe.

From New York Times bestselling writer Brian K. Vaughan (Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina) and critically acclaimed artist Fiona Staples (Mystery Society, North 40), Saga is the sweeping tale of one young family fighting to find their place in the worlds. Fantasy and science fiction are wed like never before in this sexy, subversive drama for adults.
Saga is a fairly new comic series. It was published in March of 2012.  I was on my kindle and I saw the cover in my comics app.  The first two issues of Saga were advertised as free so I went ahead and checked it out.  I normally don't read digital comics, but I'm glad I did this time.  I was hooked from page one.  I haven't been so engulfed in a world like this since when I was reading Harry Potter as a kid.

After reading the first two issues, I went to my local comic book store to buy the first volume.  This book is weird.  It's a cross between Star Wars and Romeo and Juliet.  There are talking cats, disembodied babysitter who is missing her bottom half, robots with television heads having sex, and a weird, bare chested spider lady with no arms.  It has some weird shit going on and I love it.

Volume 2 comes out July 2nd!!!!!

Rachel Rising, 2011
Written and drawn by Terry Moore

Goodreads Summary
Rachel wakes up at sunrise on a shallow grave in the woods and discovers the freshly murdered body in the dirt is her own. With events of the previous night a blur, Rachel seeks out her boyfriend Phillip. But Phillip has a new girl now and Rachel is beginning to suspect she rose from the grave for a reason... revenge! (volume 1)
Rachel and Jet will not stay dead. It's a mystery to the two BFFs, but they suspect it has something to do with a 10-year old serial killer and a witch who wants revenge on Manson, the little town with a wicked past. (volume 2)
I put the blurbs for both volume 1 and 2 to give you a better picture of what the story is about.  Terry Moore is my favorite writer in comics. I'm a huge fan of Strangers in Paradise and Echo.  The man is super talented.  He has great female characters and I really appreciate that.  Anyways, this horror comic is fantastic.  It is slowly paced, but in a good way.  You leave each issue wanting to know more.

Rachel literally rising

Good news!  We might be seeing Rachel Rising on the small screen!  Rachel Rising is the first title to be picked up by Alcon Television Group.  I bet they're hoping Rachel Rising will be the next big hit since The Walking Dead tv show has become so popular.

By the way, a quick look at amazon.com and it shows that issue #1 of Rachel Rising is selling for $149.95. That's insane.

Kabuki, Vol.1: Circle of Blood, 1994
Written and drawn by David Mack

Goodreads Summary
In a story that spans Japan's history and future, and alludes to the haunting traditions of the Japanese Ghost story, Kabuki: Circle of Blood touches on the interdependence between organized crime and politics in Japan.

This series is set in an alternate near future Japan where the protagonist, Kabuki, is an enforcement agent and television personality for the government called The Noh.  If The Noh identify a person or group that may be potentially dangers then they send Kabuki or their other agents to eliminate the threat.  She was brought into this world by a brutal rape and her mother eventually dies while giving birth.  This graphic novel is bloody, beautiful, and tragic.  If you're a fan of the medium then you should definitely pick this one up.  I've only read the first volume, but my birthday is coming up and the other volumes are definitely on my wishlist.

So, there you have it. Three of my favorite books in comics at the moment.
