Hexed #1 Review

Title: Hexed #1
Written by Michael Alan Nelson
Art by Dan Mora
Published by Boom! Studios

Luci Jennifer Inacio Das Neves (most people just call her “Lucifer”) is a supernatural thief-for-hire, stealing wondrous objects from the dark denizens of the netherworld for her mentor/mother figure, Val Brisendine. But when Lucifer accidentally unleashes a terrible evil from one of the paintings hanging in Val’s art gallery, will any of the tricks up her sleeve be enough to stop it?

This book is awesome. I'm so glad I picked it up. It is violent with great supernatural characters. It gives you a lot of information it the first issue so I'll probably read it again just to make sure I didn't miss anything. I was really impressed with the lead character Lucifer. She is fun and witty and I can't wait to see more of her. She has a destiny that she doesn't want so I'm interested in seeing how that evolves. The supporting characters we meet are interesting and I don't feel as if anyone is terribly forgettable.

The art is great. It's bright and clean. Plus, the cover by Emma Rios of Pretty Deadly is fantastic. I knew if she was involved at least some how then this would be a book worth reading. Over all, this is a great first issue! Boom! Studios is quickly becoming one of my favorite publisher for new comic books. They write fun, smart, interesting stories and I always want to pick up any #1 issues I see. If you're a fan of Supernatural, Constantine, or The Wicked & Divine then I would check this one out.

Saturday Haul!

So, I haven't posted in a little while.  I've been trying to find time to finish my Raymond Feist's Magician: Apprentice so I can put up a book review, but shit happens. Instead, I wound up just doing nothing! Anyways, this week was a fairly good haul. Got some great comics and some new books so check them out below!

Filth
Directed by: Jon S. Baird
Starring: James McAvoy, Jamie Bell, Eddie Marsen

A corrupt cop manipulates and hallucinates his way through a bid to secure a promotion and win back his wife and daughter.

The Magicians by Lev Grossman

Quentin Coldwater is brilliant but miserable. He's a senior in high school, and a certifiable genius, but he's still secretly obsessed with a series of fantasy novels he read as a kid, about the adventures of five children in a magical land called Fillory. Compared to that, anything in his real life just seems gray and colorless.
Everything changes when Quentin finds himself unexpectedly admitted to a very secret, very exclusive college of magic in upstate New York, where he receives a thorough and rigorous education in the practice of modern sorcery. He also discovers all the other things people learn in college: friendship, love, sex, booze, and boredom. But something is still missing. Magic doesn't bring Quentin the happiness and adventure he though it would.
Then, after graduation, he and his friends make a stunning discovery: Fillory is real.
A Natural History of Dragons: A Memoir by Lady Trent written by Marie Brennan
All the world, from Scirland to the farthest reaches of Eriga, know Isabella, Lady Trent, to be the world’s preeminent dragon naturalist. She is the remarkable woman who brought the study of dragons out of the misty shadows of myth and misunderstanding into the clear light of modern science. But before she became the illustrious figure we know today, there was a bookish young woman whose passion for learning, natural history, and, yes, dragons defied the stifling conventions of her day.

Here at last, in her own words, is the true story of a pioneering spirit who risked her reputation, her prospects, and her fragile flesh and bone to satisfy her scientific curiosity; of how she sought true love and happiness despite her lamentable eccentricities; and of her thrilling expedition to the perilous mountains of Vystrana, where she made the first of many historic discoveries that would change the world forever.

Marie Brennan introduces an enchanting new world in A Natural History of Dragons.

The Wicked + Divine #3, Story by Kieron Gillen and Art by Jamie McKelvie and Matt Wilson. Image Comics.

Laura has no choice. She has to go underground to find the goth-goth-gothity-goth of the Morrigan. Is this the most illadvised underworld-related decision since Orpheus decided to see how Eurydice was doing in the back seat?

Trees #4 by Warren Ellis and Jason Howard. Image Comics.

Chenglei is starting to find himself in Shu, the Chinese city built under a Tree: but things are starting to find him, too. There's a storm coming, and the pressure is starting to be felt all over the world.

Supreme Blue Rose #2 by Warren Ellis and Tula Lotay. Iimage Comics.

Diana Dane is being transported by Darius Dax in the hunt for the mysterious Ethan Crane. It's a car ride that takes her a lot further than she expects: out into the nature of the universe itself.

Batwoman #34 by Marc Andreyko, Jeremy Huan. Cover by Rafael Albuquerque. DC Comics

This issue changes everything! Batwoman must make a choice that Maggie's not willing to make! And where does Nocturna fit into all of this?

Okay, so pretty productive haul this week. I'm pretty excited about the two books I picked up. I've heard good things about both. I need to pick up the reading pace though...which seems unlikely because I start school next week AND it's also Dragon*Con weekend! BEST WEEKEND EVER!

This week my pull list was very Image friendly. I love Image. They're probably producing my favorite books at the moment and I am always looking for new books from them. I trust them to create good content (most of the time!). I have two Warren Ellis books too. I enjoy him as a writer and look forward to both of these books continuing! And finally, I'm getting back into Batwoman. It is one of the first series I started reading when I first got into comics. I just kind of left it behind, and not because it wasn't good. It was an okay book with GREAT art. I just never got around to adding it to my pull list. Well, I'm giving her another chance. It's a random issue to start with, but I'll catch. No worries.

I promise I'll put up some reviews!! And for those of you watching the season premiere of Doctor Who tonight, DO NOT spoil anything for me! I'm waiting to see it on Monday in the movie theater! I'll probably be avoiding all social media for a little while until then. *puts fingers in ear*

Spotlight on She-Hulk!

JENNIFER WALTERS IS…THE SHE-HULK! A stalwart Avenger, valued member of the FF, savior of the world on more than one occasion, she's also a killer attorney with a pile of degrees and professional respect. A 7-foot-tall drink of cool, emerald water, she's tough enough to knock out Galactus with one punch (possibly?) and has a heart bigger than the moon. But juggling cases and kicking bad guy butt is starting to be a little more complicated than she anticipated. With a new practice, a new paralegal and a mounting number of super villains she's racking up as personal enemies, She Hulk might have bitten off a little more than she can chew…but she just calls that that Tuesday.

One day, I randomly saw She-Hulk #1 (which I have some how misplaced!) on the shelf at my local comic book store and I absolutely loved the cover.  I don't read a lot of Marvel titles so I decided why not check this one out.  After that day, I fell in love with She-Hulk aka Jennifer Walters!  Her new series is so much fun.  It's colorful and Jennifer is funny, cool, and sassy.  This is a great comic for all ages.  I read a lot of serious comic books so adding this to my pull list helped brighten it up a little. I love Charles Soule's writing and the art of Javier Pulido with the bright colors from Muntsa Vicente create a dynamic story that leaves me wanting more at the end of each issues.

So, who is She-Hulk you ask? Well, her name is Jennifer Walters and she is a lawyer/super hero.  She has fought with The Avengers and Fantastic Four.  She's also Bruce Banner's cousin.  You might now him as The Hulk.  After being shot, Bruce had to give her a blood transfusion with his own gamma-radiated blood which turned her into the She-Hulk.  Unlike Bruce, Jennifer can control when she becomes She-Hulk and from what I can see in the comics spends most of her time in that form.  Also, unlike her cousin, her intelligence isn't affected when she is hulked out. As a side note, I love her friend Hellcat.  They fight crime together and are total besties, but are also competitive. Hellcat doesn't have any superpowers and feels like she has to constantly remind Jennifer that she can still kick as much ass as she can!  I know this sounds kind of silly, but it is just fun to see them save the day together.  This book is so much fun, so if you read comics and are looking to add something to your pull list then PLEASE add She-Hulk!  I want this title to be around for a long time, so please go out and support it.

One day, my boyfriend comes home from work with a HUGE tub of comic books.  His boss just gave us over 100 of his old comic books. And guess who was in the huge pile of comic books?  That's right, my girl She-Hulk.  His boss had about two years worth of She-Hulk comics (about 25 issues) from her run in the late 80's to mid 90's. You could say I was a little excited.

Will I love the She-Hulk from the late 80's as much as I love her current version?  I doubt it (hoping that I am wrong).  I think there is something really special about this book, but I will read the older issues and let you guys know my thoughts.

Look at that gorgeous cover. JUST LOOK AT IT!

Alright guys, I'm done. Just go out and buy the damn book. Thanks!

Sci-Fi Sunday: Rocket Raccoon #1, #2 Review

Title: Rocket Raccoon, Issues 1 and 2
Writer/Illustrator: Skottie Young
Publisher: Marvel

After seeing Guardians of the Galaxy for the second time, I hopped over to my local comic book store and bought the first two issues of Rocket Raccoon by Skottie Young. I have admitted over the years of being a DC junkie and I haven’t really read much Marvel. It's not that I didn't want to. I was just so focused on DC and also a lot of independent titles that I just didn't have the money to add more books to my pull list. Lately, I have slowly been adding more and more Marvel titles. After reading and LOVING She-Hulk (review to come later), and then loving Guardians of the Galaxy I thought my next Marvel book should be Rocket Raccoon. I am so happy I picked up this book. Rocket is such a fun character and Skottie Young writes him perfectly. Not to mention the art is just as fun as the dialogue.

So, Rocket is on a mission to save a Princess and does so successfully and not without a little bravado. Later, we see him enjoying a night out with a woman watching Groot in a wrestling match. All is going to plan, until he and his date are put on the kiss cam and the authorities are alerted to his presence. Turns out, Rocket is wanted for murder! Rocket calls Star-Lord to find out what is going on. Turns out someone who looks just like Rocket is out there murdering people. It looks like Rocket may not be as alone as he thought. Add in a handful of pissed off ex-girlfriends and you have the beginning of a fun space adventure. Finding out there is another person like Rocket out there made my heart melt a little because I went back to that scene in the movie when he was drunk and upset about being alone. (Damn, you Marvel for making me care about a talking raccoon!). So I am definitely interested to see what happens when Rocket meets this mystery Raccoon.

Conclusion: This book starts off with a bang of action and laughter. I'm happy I picked this one up and will be adding it to my pull list. (You should too!)

Sci-Fi Sunday

So, I have decided to dedicate Sunday to the wonderful world of science fiction.  Today, I am going to focus on two new comic books from Image comics titled Trees and Bitch Planet.

Ten years after they landed. All over the world. And they did nothing, standing on the surface of the Earth like trees, exerting their silent pressure on the world, as if there were no-one here and nothing under foot. Ten years since we learned that there is intelligent life in the universe, but that they did not recognize us as intelligent or alive. Beginning a new science fiction graphic novel by WARREN ELLIS and JASON HOWARD.
I recently read Trees #1 -3 and I'll say I'm intrigued.  This story could be pretty good. I feel that the first three issues were a little jumpy.  You travel across the globe and weave in and out of different storylines.  Ten years after the aliens have landed and humanity has adapted differently to the "Trees" in various parts of the world.  Some are barricaded in a new city, others are running from the pacification police.  I am interested to see where this book is going. It seems to focus on the humans a lot and not so much about the aliens.  They're just in the background at least for now.  I love the way the trees look.  They stand out in the landscape and I really want to see who is inside.  So, if you enjoy comics and are looking for a new science fiction book to and to your pull list, make sure to add Trees.

Now, let me move on to a title I am suuppperrr excited about: Bitch Planet by Kelly Sue DeConnick (Pretty Deadly, Captain Marvel) and Valentine De Landro (X-Factor).  Image Comics wrote in an article on their website that DeConnick and De Landro "are bringing the Women in Prison trope to outer space in BITCH PLANET.  Sure to be a campy, kick-ass adventure, BITCH PLANET is the story of five leading ladies ready to bust out of their prison cells".  (check out the whole article here). Um, YES PLEASE! This is what I love about comics.  You can tell so many stories and sometimes you get really weird stuff like Bitch Planet.  Sometimes I think the comic book gods do hear my prayers.  I haven't heard any more news on this title, but I'll keep everyone updated.  It is supposed to come out in 2014 so hopefully we will start seeing some cover art soon and a few previews.
